Sport

Sport is an important part of student life at Kooringal High School. We provide a range of competitive and recreational opportunities that support physical wellbeing, teamwork and personal development. Students can participate in school-based sport, interschool competitions and representative pathways through the NSW School Sport Unit.

Participation is encouraged at all levels, from recreational involvement to state representation.

Sport House Groups

Kooringal High School has four houses: Bidgee, Lawson, Farrer and Sturt.
All students are allocated to a house when they enrol. The house system promotes participation, teamwork and school spirit across sport, academic and cultural activities throughout the year.

Students earn points for their house through carnivals, competitions and whole-school events. House points are accumulated across the year, with the winning house recognised at Presentation Day.

Bidgee is named after the Murrumbidgee River, which flows through the Riverina region and is significant to the local landscape and community.

The bear represents strength and determination. Students in Bidgee work together to demonstrate resilience, teamwork and commitment in school activities.

Farrer is named in honour of William Farrer, a pioneering agricultural scientist who developed rust-resistant wheat varieties in the Riverina region. His work had a lasting impact on Australian agriculture.

The falcon symbolises focus, vision and excellence. Farrer students are encouraged to strive for personal best and leadership.

Lawson is named after Henry Lawson, one of Australia’s most well-known writers, who spent time in the Riverina area. His stories reflect resilience and community spirit.

The lion represents courage and pride. Lawson students are encouraged to show confidence, integrity and respect.

Sturt is named after Charles Sturt, an explorer who travelled through inland New South Wales and along the Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers in the 19th century.

The shark represents determination and drive. Sturt students are encouraged to demonstrate persistence and teamwork.

Kooringal High School’s sporting teams compete as the Kooringal Crows.

The name reflects our connection to Wagga Wagga. The name “Wagga Wagga” comes from the Wiradjuri language. In Wiradjuri, repetition can indicate plurality, and the name is commonly understood to mean “place of many crows.”

The crow represents awareness, intelligence and strong community ties. As the Kooringal Crows, our students demonstrate teamwork, resilience and pride when representing the school in sport.

We acknowledge the Wiradjuri people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our school stands and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

How Sport Runs

School Sport is held on Wednesday afternoons. Sport begins at 1.15pm and finishes at 3pm. When the 3pm bell rings, students who walk home are allowed to leave the school premises and walk home or be picked up by a Parent/Carer. Students who catch a bus are to remain on school grounds, where they will be supervised by staff until 3:30pm.

Year 7 Sport Term 1

Students will be allocated a Sport group and groups will rotate through a series of games and sports at Henwood Park. Students will walk to and from Henwood Park under teacher supervision.

Year 7 Sport (Terms 2, 3 & 4), Year 8, 9 and 10 (Terms 1, 2, 3 and 4)

Students will be able to select their sport for each season (5 week block of a term). There are a variety of onsite and offsite sports available to choose from. Some of these sports involve a cost for the activity and another cost for the bus (passes can be purchased for the entire season via Schoolbytes). Information will be provided to students and parents/carers before each sport season about what sports are available and the costs associated with each. Students will complete their sport selections through Schoolbytes and parents/carers are required to give permission for offsite sports via Schoolbytes.

School Sport Carnivals

Each year, our school hosts three major whole-school sporting events. These are the Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals which provide students with the opportunity to participate, compete and celebrate school spirit.

The swimming carnival is held early in Term 1 and encourages students to showcase their aquatic skills in competitive races.

The athletics carnival features track and field events including sprints, relays, high jump, long jump, javelin, shot put and discus, allowing students to demonstrate their athletic ability.

Our cross country carnival challenges students to test their endurance on a scenic course in the local area.

These carnivals are vibrant, inclusive days that promote participation, house spirit, sportsmanship and pride in representing our school community. Student results at our school carnivals influence qualification for the Riverina School Sports Association Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Championships.

2026 House Captains

At KHS we have four sports Houses; Bidgee, Farrer, Lawson and Sturt.

House Captains play an important leadership role in promoting pride, unity and participation within their house and across the wider school community. They are responsible for leading by example, demonstrating respect, teamwork and enthusiasm in school events. House Captains encourage and support students from all year groups to get involved, celebrate success and contribute positively to school spirit. They work closely with staff and fellow leaders to organise and represent their house at key events, assist in assemblies and contribute to a welcoming, inclusive and motivated school environment.

The 2026 House Captains are:

Bidgee - Stephanie Charlton and Olivia Bryant

Farrer - Jade Eastwood and Ria Kaur

Lawson - Gemma McNaughton and Lucas Roberts

Sturt - Lily Wilkinson and Chester Tremain

House groups earn points at the school swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals and the captains of the winning house at the end of the year are presented with the House Cup on behalf of their house.
