HSIE

Head Teacher: Mrs Sarah Carter

The HSIE Faculty at Kooringal High School provides engaging and meaningful learning experiences that empower students to understand the world around them and their place within it. Through the study of History, Geography and the Social Sciences, students develop critical thinking, research and analytical skills while exploring the forces that shape societies, environments, economies and legal systems.

In Years 7 to 10, students undertake mandatory courses in History and Geography, building a strong foundation in understanding people, places and change over time. Students explore topics such as ancient civilisations, global conflicts, environmental management and Australia’s role in a globalised world. Learning experiences combine explicit teaching with inquiry-based activities, encouraging students to analyse evidence, investigate real-world issues and develop informed perspectives.

From Year 9, students can choose elective subjects including Commerce, Elective History and Psychology. These courses allow students to further explore areas of interest while developing skills in research, decision-making and critical analysis. Students investigate contemporary challenges such as environmental sustainability, social change, economic decision-making and justice, building the knowledge and skills needed to become informed and active citizens.

In Years 11 and 12, students can specialise in a wide range of senior courses including Ancient History, Modern History, History Extension, Geography, Legal Studies, Society and Culture, Business Studies and Work Studies. These courses provide opportunities for independent research, analysis of real-world case studies and the development of advanced skills in critical thinking, evaluation and communication.

Through varied programs and authentic learning experiences, the HSIE Faculty encourages curiosity, intellectual challenge and informed engagement with the world. Students are supported to become confident thinkers, responsible citizens and lifelong learners prepared for future study and careers.
