NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Starting Dates

The following dates apply:

Tuesday 29^th January – Staff only
Wednesday 30^th January – 7, 11, and 12 – Canteen will reopen
Thursday 31^st January– All students

Year 7

Students are to meet in the KHS gym at 9:00am. Parents are welcome to stay until 9:30am. As Wednesday is a sport day, sport uniform is to be worn. Pick up is 3:30pm. Please make sure your child is aware of their bus number.

Book packs

The Year 7 learning requirements will include the bringing of a device to school each day. Book packs will be available to purchase from Hunters Newsagency for $19.95, which will consist of a 5-subject book, a Visual Arts diary and a Mathematics grid book.

There is no set book list for other years. Teachers will advise students if anything specific is required.

New Enrolments

Those living in the school zone are entitled to a place at Kooringal High School. Those not living in zone are entitled to apply for an out of zone place. Such places are limited in each year so there is not a guarantee of enrolment. All enrolments will be required to provide evidence of their place of residence such as a rate notice, electricity or gas account and to provide copies of recent reports if possible.

Uniform

The wearing of uniform reflects pride and respect and helps to prepare students for the work environment. The Kooringal High School community strongly endorses the uniform policy. All students are expected to wear school uniform at all times and parents are asked to assist the school with this important issue.

Footwear

Work Health and Safety applies in schools. Footwear for students should cover the foot so No thongs or sandals! No slip on canvas shoes! Slip on canvas shoes or fashion shoes are flimsy and are not to be worn.

The expected footwear for students is black school shoes that cover the foot. Students who wear incorrect footwear will be excluded from practical classrooms.

School Closure

Please be aware that the school will close for the year at the end of Wednesday December 19^th. This means that the school will be non-operational for December 20 and 21 and will re-open again on January 29^th next year.

The school will also be closed to all staff and visitors over the holiday period to accommodate the replacement of our upper walkway ceilings.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Focus on Ability award winners

Kooringal High School's entry in the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival ‘"We Can Do it" won Most Online Votes in the Schools section of the tenth annual international competition.

Kooringal High School (KHS) received their prize at the gala awards night at The Concourse in Sydney on 5 September to a crowd of 650 people. They won prizes & cash to the value of $10,000.

Important changes for Cross Country Carnival

Please note some important changes for the Cross Country tomorrow - 2nd May

After an early lunch, at 12:45pm ALL students will go to the gym, assemble in age groups to apply coloured arm tape and be given further instructions.

3km & 4km starters will be taken directly by bus to your start points. 6km starters will be taken to the Boat Club and walk to the start.

Your bags will be taken by bus to the Boat Club to await you at the finish.

The 6km start has been changed so that the lap of Apex Park is no longer included.

Online Sports Selection

Online sports selections for Term 2 sport are now open. Sports selections will be done through the Sentral student portal and students log in here using their DEC username and password. Permission notes are due back by the end of Term 1.

The permission note is available from the portal once you log in. Please ensure that you have selected your sport in Sentral online as the permission note does not guarantee a place in the sport; it must be finalised online first.

Civil & Environmental Engineering Work Experience Application Form

Advice for Year 10 Parents from NESA

The new changes regarding National Minimum Standards and HSC do not affect current Year 10 students.

If your child received a Band 8 or higher in all three areas of their 2017 Year 9 NAPLAN test - Reading, Writing and Numeracy - they have achieved the National Minimum Standard for HSC.

If a Band 8 was not achieved, students are being provided with the opportunity to sit an online test, available each term. Letters have been sent to students who can sit this test. The information in these letters remains accurate in light of the new changes.

Please be aware that if your child achieved a Band 8 in one or two areas, the online test remains applicable for the remaining area/s.

ICAS UNSW Global Assessments

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Science Faculty will be offering students a chance to participate in the ICAS UNSW Global Assessments for Years 7-10. It is a powerful diagnostic tool and every year, thousands of schools participate in ICAS, giving an international benchmark that can be relied upon.

We wish to inform you that on Tuesday 1^st August, 2017 there will be a subject information evening held at school in the Gym. The evening will commence at 7.30pm. This evening is to inform parents of Stage 5 course requirements and to outline the process of selecting subjects. All parents and students are encouraged to attend this evening.

Many faculties have organised information sessions during class time to give students a greater understanding about subjects they teach. These have been occurring since last term and will continue into next week. Students are given the opportunity to ask many questions during these sessions.

Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)

PISA is one of the assessments that forms part of the National Assessment Program in Australia, which is the measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes. All Australian Education Ministers have agreed to Australian schools' participation in PISA, which is reflected in the Australian Education Act 2013.

Our school will be participating in the OECD PISA Field Trial on June 1 and June 5.

A random sample of up to 79 students aged around 15-years-old will be randomly selected from our school to participate. They will complete a two-hour computer-based assessment consisting of reading, mathematics, science and financial literacy questions. These students will also complete a questionnaire that includes questions about their home background and attitudes to learning.

New finance system

Letters were mailed out to parents/carers regarding the transition to the new NSW Public Schools' finance system and bank account.

The online payment facility has been temporarily removed from our website during this period.

Between Tuesday 16 May and Friday 26 May we will be unable to receipt cash or cheques and unable to take EFTPOS payments.

We ask if you need to make a payment, please do so either before Tuesday or from Monday 29 May.

Year 10 WH&S White Card

Kooringal High School will be running a WH&S White Card training day on Wednesday 3rd May and Wednesday 10th May. The 6 hour training is mandatory for students who wish to participate in work experience in construction based career areas, such as: carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, concreting, electrical, tiling, painting, landscaping, civil engineering, architecture, drafting etc.

Cost of the course is $60 and is payable to the office no later than Wednesday 26th April. Please note that numbers are limited.

Year 7 Vaccinations

Year 7 students are reminded that vaccinations are on Friday 31 March 2017. If you did not receive a NSW Dept. of Health envelope, please collect one from the office and return it as soon as possible. Students are encouraged to eat a good breakfast and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated as this can help reduce any side effects they might otherwise experience.

From 12th May, applications for free school travel will need to be completed online instead of using paper forms.

The change makes it easier to apply, as you only need to complete one form that covers all situations and allows you to update details (changing school, name or address) when the need arises.

Link - VET Entertainment Ad

Late in 2014 Kooringal High School received a grant from the CSU community partnership for the purchase of 3 video cameras for the development of VET Industry advertisements.

As part of the project, CSU lecturer Matt Olsen visited the school and went through the process of developing the ads with the year 11 Entertainment students.

The students planned, filmed and edited the ads for each Vet industry course studied at Kooringal High School.

The VET Entertainment ad (use link Above) is the first of the completed projects.

We would like to thank Matt Olsen and the CSU community partnership for their support in the development of this project.

Tell Them From Me Survey

Parents,

For the past two years Kooringal High School Students have participated in a survey called Tell Them From Me.

The survey is anonymous and results from the school are aggregated into a whole school report.

The survey is the opportunity for students to respond to a range of questions about KHS, in particular in relation to wellbeing, engagement in the classroom and effective teaching.

The results are valuable for school planning and the development of programs.

Parents have an option to exclude their child from the survey. Expressions of Interest

Kooringal High School is seeking suitably qualified personnel to work on a casual basis in the administration area. The work will be irregular and could range in length from day to day or block work. Applicants require a good knowledge of Microsoft applications and general office procedures.

It is a requirement that all school staff undergo a Working with Children check and complete both Anaphylaxis and Emergency Care Training.

Today the Kooringal High School Buckley Shield team defeated Mount Austin High School 42-24 making them Riverina Champions. The boys now play a Western Region team as they advance through to the final 16 in the state wide competition. This is a wonderful achievement and we wish the team further success.

In the Heights

This high-energy show features lovable characters, a contemporary Latin-flavoured score and dance moves. It is also very sweet and sentimental, wearing its heart on its sleeve. You may even get a little misty-eyed by the end.

In the Heights centres on a variety of characters living in the neighbourhood of Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the centre of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging cuban lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighbouring beauty salon, dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi's, has returned to the neighbourhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for their daughter. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighbourhood get a dose of what it means to be home.

In this candy-coated take on El Barrio there's really nothing to offend the younger students, who will undoubtedly appreciate the "cool" factor of the central character who emotes in rap.

Emily Ramsay Awarded Charles Houen Scholarship

Emily Ramsay is the recipient of the Wagga Wagga Sunrise Charles Houen Memorial scholarship. Emily displayed an aptitude for law and achieved outstanding results during the Preliminary course in 2013. The award of $500 is given to support Emily during her HSC year and to encourage her in the area of Legal Studies. A further award of $1000 will be made by the club if Emily successfully completes the first year of a university course in the study of law.

Charles Houen was a well-known and respected lawyer in Wagga and District for many years.

Mr Houen won a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1956 and gained a double degree in Arts/Law at the University of Sydney.

Ten years later he became a new solicitor at Creaghe Lisle in Wagga and was a senior partner at the time of his death in 2008. He was appointed to and was the only country member of the Professional Standards Board of NSW, and received the prestigious award of Lawyer of the Year in NSW in 1988.

Mr Houen also served with a wide range of educational and charitable community organisations usually as honorary solicitor, director or trustee. These included the Anglican Diocesan Synod for 24 years, chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of the Riverina for 20 years, St John's Parish Council for 17 years and the Salvation Army consultative committee.

He lectured in law at the Wagga Campus of TAFE, and served on a number of local school boards including Sacred Heart, Trinity High and the Riverina Anglican College.

He was a Wagga City Council alderman from 1974 to 1977, and was awarded Rotary's highest honour, a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2003.

In recognition of the service which Charles Houen gave to the community, the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Sunrise award a scholarship to a student from Kooringal High School who has completed Year 11 Legal Studies and is intending to continue studies in law.

Paradigm - Unconventional Thinking

Students in Year 9 in our Selective Stream undertake Research Studies in the Elective Lines.

Research Studies is designed to teach students research and presentation skills in a supportive environment that allows them to research in their own area of interest.

All Selective Students undertake the course which also provides excellent grounding for study in the senior school and beyond.

Tagged "Unconventional Thinking" because it does not specify an area of study and gives students the freedom to study in an area of interest, the course is supported via mentoring with academics from Charles Sturt University and from the wider Wagga Wagga community.

In addition, students are taught a presentation method known as pecha kucha which requires their research findings to be condensed to 20 slides with approximately 20 seconds spent on each slide. The discipline gained from this exercise in synthesising their work is a valuable asset.

Strongly supported by Partnership Broker COMPACT, the course has received many positive reviews from students and parents.

KHS TOM Teams Move on to State

Congratulations to the four Kooringal High School teams for a fantastic effort in the Regional Tournament of Minds final on Saturday 24^thAugust 2013.

Two teams placed first in the discipline of Maths Engineering and Social Sciences and will now travel to Sydney for the Tournament of Minds State finals held at the University of New South Wales.

Riverina Cup Rugby League

Kooringal High School have won the Riverina Cup in a hard fought game against St Francis College Leeton 12 - 4. Tries went to Matt Lyons and Jesse Thompson with Cody Hodge kicking 2 goals. Kooringal did not gain the ascendency until the 49th minute in this close match.

Well done boys in becoming the first KHS Team to win the Riverina Cup.

Prestigious Scholarship to KHS Teacher

On Saturday, History Head Teacher Ms Debbie Locke, was awarded one of the 16 NSW Premier's Teacher Scholarships awarded in 2013. This prestigious award, 273 people applied, was presented at Government House by the Premier The Hon. Barry O'Farrell.

Ms Locke will use the scholarship to study approaches to local history in schools across Australia with the aim of developing a template which will engage students with their local area and build relationships with their community. Her special focus will be the multiple ability classroom.

At KHS we congratulate Ms Locke on her scholarship. It is a great recognition for a talented teacher.

Kooringal High guitarist hits the right note at Opera House Encore gig

Kooringal High graduate, James Taylor struck a chord when he played at the Sydney Opera House last week.

He was one of 20 top musicians chosen for the Encore concert from the most outstanding candidates who sat for the 2012 Higher School Certificate Music examinations.

Kooringal High School's Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts, John Russell applauded how well James played on the iconic Opera House stage.

"He displayed his outstanding skills as a guitarist," Mr Russell said proudly.

His commendation was echoed by Riverina Regional Arts Co-ordinator, Dianna Alexander who said gaining a coveted place on the Encore program was no mean feat.

"Each year, Riverina Region public schools receive a number of nominations," Mrs Alexander said.

"But, it is extremely difficult to actually gain a selection in the Encore program.

"This is even more so in the case of a guitarist! There are so many guitarists playing in HSC Music performance section across the state from which to chose."

Mrs Alexander said the reports coming back to the Riverina about James's Opera House performance have been very positive.

"He was just outstanding," Mrs Alexander said.

"Besides being an awesome musician, James was a great ambassador for the Riverina Region."

James, along with fellow members of the Kooringal High Trio was also chosen to be part of the foyer entertainment at last year's Schools Spectacular in Sydney.

He is currently undertaking a ‘gap year' in Wagga Wagga before furthering his studies.

Courtney Turner Wins $20,000 Scholarship

Courtney Turner, Vice Captain of the school in 2012 added further to her list of accolades by winning a $20,000 scholarship to study at Charles Sturt University.

Recipient of a Ministers Award for Excellence in Student Achievement in 2012, Courtney will study Physiotherapy this year in Albury.

Courtney took up the challenge to create a short film indicating what study at the university would mean for her future.

Titled Me + CSU = World Domination Courtney's film was judged the best of entries from across the state.

As a result she becomes a Digital Ambassador for the university and won a $20,000 scholarship.

HSC 2012 - Strength Across the Year

Our students performed strongly in the 2012 HSC building on the academic reputation of the school established in previous years.

Of the 89 students who sat the 34 courses delivered by the school:

10 students were listed in the State Distinguished Achievers Lists for receiving a mark in the 90s in their subject.

The school also received:

65 Band 5 results (80 - 89)
170 Band 4 results (70 - 79)
142 Band 3 results (60 - 69)
50% of individual scores were Marks above 70
81% of individual scores were marks above 60

Standout performers included Joshua Prenzler who received a mark of 99 in Music 1 and Courtney Turner who won a $20, 000 scholarship to study at Charles Sturt University.

A large number of students received university entry with courses including medicine, mechanical engineering, teaching, nursing, animal science, speech pathology, TV production, physiotherapy and psychology.

Principal Glyn Leyshon was pleased with the results for students and with the diversity of positive outcomes at all academic levels.

The Minister's Award for Excellence is awarded to a small number of teachers and students each year.

The Kooringal High School community is proud to acknowledge the achievements of Head Teacher TAS, Andrew Upton, and Vice-Captain Courtney Turner who each received this accolade in 2012.

Courtney Turner

For the past six years Courtney Turner has made an outstanding contribution to the life of Kooringal High School. Her leadership qualities saw her elected Vice-Captain of the school in 2012 and she has given exemplary service on the school, the Riverina Region and the State Student Representative Council.

In addition to this service Courtney's contribution to the school community has included significant involvement in the Performing Arts especially in the field of production and stage management. In addition she has served the wider community through involvement with charities and service on Wagga Wagga City Council Youth Initiatives.

Courtney Turner has on four occasions been awarded Outstanding Academic Achievement on Presentation Night and she has received distinctions in National academic competitions.

Courtney Turner, through her actions and influence has consistently displayed the highest values required of students in our NSW Public Schools.

With a high degree of integrity and through the pursuit of excellence she is a leader, a contributor and an inspiration to the school community.

Andrew Upton

Andrew Upton is a most accomplished teacher and leader of the Technology faculty. His knowledge of curriculum and teaching and learning practice is outstanding and his classroom offers a diverse range of experiences for students who achieve excellent results. He is also highly regarded as a mentor to other teachers at the school and at the regional level.

Debating Success - Darby Savage

Congratulations Darby Savage!!! Regional debater, State Champion and State Representative

Recently, Darby Savage of Year 10 was chosen to represent the Riverina Region at the State Debating Championship. Darby travelled to Sydney as one of the debaters of the Riverina team and took part in a range of workshops that were aimed at developing students' skills. The team went on to compete over 2 days at Sydney University where they debated against each region in the state.

The Riverina Region was the eventual winner of the State Final. Along the way, the Riverina team defeated the Sydney Region in the semi-final and went on to defeat the North Coast Region in the final. During adjudication of the final, Darby was mentioned specifically as one of the best performers in the final and, as a result, was chosen to represent NSW as one of four students who will go on to represent our state at a national level.

Debating is a highly challenging academic forum. At an elite level, it requires highly developed analytical thinking and persuasive oratory skills. We congratulate Darby, and wish him luck in the national competition.

Korean War Veterans Association

Softball Success

Kooringal High School Open Girls Softball Team won a bronze medal at the Combined High Schools Final Series in Newcastle this week.

Kooringal High School defeated Mudgee High School 20 to 1 and Cheltenham Girls High School in a tiebreak to reach the state semi-finals.

Kooringal High School were defeated by The Hills Sports High School 9 – 2 in this game but then defeated Woolooware High School from Sydney 9 – 1 to claim third place in the state.

As the final was played between two Sports High Schools Kooringal can lay claim to being the best comprehensive high school in NSW.

Jethro Peck Wins Silver Medal

Kooringal High School Year 12 student Jethro Peck travelled to Brisbane recently to compete in the 2010 WorldSkills Australia National VET in Schools Metals and Engineering Competition.

Having achieved first place in the Riverina and a silver in state competition Jethro has now won the silver medal in national competition.

WorldSkills competition draws together talented VET students from across Australia and is an intense examination of their skills across three days of competition.
